Welconstruct has completed a contract to create and maximise storage space for Argos Direct, the home shopping arm of Argos. The contract at Argos Direct’s southern hub for home delivery warehousing at Welwyn Garden City, ensures the company can continue to meet the growing demands of its customers for home deliveries. Space at the hub was at a premium due to organic growth and the launch of its new catalogue and Argos Direct was keen to find out how it could maximise the space it had without encroaching on its day to day operations. It approached Welconstruct to see if the company could offer a solution. Welconstruct provided a full design service which highlighted that Argos Direct’s requirements could be met through the addition of three new mezzanine floors and strategically placed racking and shelving. David Fussey, logistics manager, Argos Direct, says, “We called in Welconstruct because of its reputation for providing a high quality service and the ability to meet customer problems with innovative solutions. Liaison between Welconstruct and the various interested parties was critical to enable us to achieve permission for this element of work. The company arranged for floor loading core samples and tests to show that the existing floor slab was capable of carrying the loads imposed by the new structure.”
Welconstruct provided a full project management service, including CDM, which led to the
design and installation of three mezzanine floors, racking, shelving and two lifts as part of the contract. All work was carried out and completed without compromising the day to day fulfillment operation. David Fussey continues, “This was a critical project to ensure we could meet existing and growing customer demand for our product range. Welconstruct completed the project on time and within budget, working out of hours on occasion, to ensure minimal disruption to output during installation.” Following the successful completion of this contract, Welconstruct has been awarded additional work at Argos Direct’s Milton Keynes depot for the construction of a new mezzanine floor and partitioning.
